Keeping Your English Springer Spaniel Well Groomed

March 26th, 2009

English Springer Spaniels need a fair amount of grooming. This isn’t a dog that you can just brush once in a while. Proper English Springer Spaniel grooming requires that the dog get a full grooming once every six to eight weeks. The dog will need to be brushed, bathed, trimmed, and dried during their full grooming. They will also need some weekly maintenance in order to keep them looking at their best.

Although some people do it, English Springer Spaniel grooming can be difficult to do at home. It takes a lot of practice to learn how to clip and blend the hair on this type of dog since they have two different coats of hair, with one being longer than the other. Many people will bring these dogs to a professional in order to make things easier for themselves, but it can get a bit expensive. Those who want to show their dog might want to get this done by a professional if they don’t have a lot of experience with this since the standards are pretty strict for how they are supposed to look.

If you do want to groom your own dog, there are a number of websites that give step by step instructions with photographs to illustrate the process. A simple search will pull up a number of them and you can look them over to get an idea of what is involved and what sort of equipment you will need. This is easier to do if your dog doesn’t mind being groomed; otherwise you might want a helper to help you hold the dog while you are grooming him.

As these dogs can shed quite a bit, in between the full English Springer Spaniel grooming visits you will need to be sure to brush your dog often with a pin brush. You should always brush then in the direction of the hair growth and not in any other direction.

During the English Springer Spaniel grooming process, whoever is grooming the dog should also look carefully for signs of infection in the dog’s ears. These infections can be somewhat common and are a bit hard to spot if you are not looking for them.
